Taita Taveta County is leading the nation in commemorating 100(One hundred) years since the First World War. These events are referred to internationally as The First World War Centenary Commemorations. This is the biggest historical event of the 21st Century to date. During the campaign for East Africa of the war, most battles were fought within Taita Taveta County, making our County a home to many battle sites some of which are in an undisturbed state as if the war happened yesterday.
This commemoration represents a further recognition of all who gave their services and lives to the greater cause over and above those we traditionally remember on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November, since 1920, the day and the time of the armistice that ended the Great War of 1914 – 1918. The Imperial War Museum is leading the First World War Centenary Partnership which is a network of local, regional, national and international cultural and educational organization. Taita Taveta County has joined this partnership.
