  • September 2014 To commemorate the sinking of HMS Pegasus in Zanzibar Harbour and the recovery of her guns, and the sinking of the German sea raider SMS Konigsberg. One of each of these ships’ guns are now ‘guard’ the entrance to Fort Jesus.
  • To commemorate the 99 years, October 2014, in conjunction with the Kenya Aero Club, since the first aircraft flew in Kenya taking off from Maktau, in Taita Taveta.
  • The Australian High Commissioner H.E Geoff Tooth and 100 TAITA TAVETA to accompany the Governor H.E. Eng. John Mruttu for the inaugural William Dartnell Memorial Lecture on Wednesday 5th November 2014 from 1800hrs at Muthaiga Country Club, to commemorate the start of the First World War in East Africa. This lecture will be hosted by Australian High Commissioner in memory of Lt William Dartnell who was killed while fighting for the British Armed Forces in East Africa at Maktau in 1915 and buried in the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery at Voi.
  • On Thursday 6th James G Willson, author of “Guerrillas of Tsavo” will present a lecture on the First World War campaign in East Africa, a battle which outlasted the end of the Great War in Europe by 14 days.
  • 0n Friday 7th there will be a photo display which includes photos of the First World War 1 Commemorations in Taita Taveta County and a meeting with Direct Aid Programme Representatives of the Australian High Commission.
  • Back in Mombasa at the CWGC Cemetery at Mbaraki, on Sunday 9th November at 10.30 hrs. the annual Remembrance Day Service, commemorated every year since 1920 throughout the Commonwealth of Nations.
  • January 2015 will see the 100 years centenary of the arrival of the South African Expeditionary Forces under Gen Jan C Smuts
  • During May 2015 to commemorate at Maktau Indian Memorial, Subedar Ghulam Haidar IOM, of the 130th Baluchi Regiment and his unit killed in action near Maktau whilst defending the then newly appointed Commanding Officer of the Mombasa Voi Command.
  • In July 2015 the destruction of the Konigsberg will be commemorated during a ‘black tie’ evening aboard a pontoon moored over its last known position in the Rufiji River Estuary.
  • In September 2015 in Maktau & Voi to commemorate Lieutenant Wilber Dartnell VC, 25 Btn Royal Fusiliers (The Legion of Frontiersmen) an Australian volunteer soldier, killed in action near Maktau and awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
